Reincarnation is the belief that souls
are born time and time again, each time in a different body
in order to learn valuable for spiritual growth. A past life
regression is a way to tap into the subconscious mind in
order to retrieve memories of past lives. One of the most
common ways this is done is with a past life therapist
through use of hypnosis.
Past life regression is a technique
that uses hypnosis to recover what most practitioners
believe are memories of past lives or incarnations. Past
life regression is typically undertaken either in pursuit of
a spiritual experience, or in a psychotherapeutic setting.
Most advocates loosely adhere to beliefs about
reincarnation, though religious traditions that incorporate
reincarnation generally do not include the idea of repressed
memories of past lives.
The technique used during past life
regression involves the subject answering a series of
questions while being hypnotized to reveal identity and events of
alleged past lives, a method similar to that used in
recovered memory therapy and one that similarly
represents memory as a faithful recording of previous events
rather than a constructed set of recollections.
The source of the memories is more likely cryptomnesia and
confabulations that combine past experiences, knowledge,
imagination and suggestion or guidance from the hypnotist
than recall of a previous existence. Once created, the
memories are indistinguishable from memories based on events
that occurred during the subjects life.
Memories reported during past life
regression have been investigated, and revealed historical
inaccuracies that are easily explained through a basic
knowledge of history, elements of popular culture or books
that discuss historical events.
Past life regression is mentioned in
the Upanishads of ancient India, but is discussed in greater
detail in the Yoga Sutras of Patańjali. Writing during the
second century BCE, the Hindu scholar Patańjali discussed
the soul being burdened with an accumulation of impressions
that were part of the karma from previous lives.
Patańjali called the process of past life regression,
prati-prasav (literally "reverse birthing"), and involved
addressing current problems through memories of past lives.
Prati-prasav is used today as a practice in some types of
yoga.In the modern era, it was the works of Madame Blavatsky,
co-founder of the Theosophical Society, which brought it a
new found popularity, especially in the West. French
educator Allan Kardec also delved into past life regression
in The Spirits Book and Heaven and Hell. Past life
regression therapy has been developed since the 1950s by
psychologists, psychiatrists and mediums. The belief gained
credibility because some of the advocates possess legitimate
credentials, though these credentials were in areas
unrelated to religion, psychotherapy or other domains
dealing with past lives and mental health.
During A Past Life Regression?
Initially, the goal is to place a
person in a totally relaxed state. This would mean sitting
or lying down in a comfortable position and then beginning to
take some deep, relaxing breaths. Next, the past life regressionist will begin a guided, visualization process in
which the person will be instructed to picture a particular
scene in their mind. This could involve descending a set of
stairs, with each step allowing the individual to become
more and more relaxed.
Another visualization technique
involves being in some type of room or building with a
series of doors, with each door representing a past life.
Different therapists use different techniques. At this
point, the key is to enable a person to be relaxed enough to
access memories of past lives from their subconscious mind.
It is important to note that even though a person is placed
under hypnosis, that individual is still completely aware of
everything around them.
Once the person begins to explore a
past life the therapist may ask some questions to help
determine what sex a person was, where the individual lived,
the type of clothing they wore, what they did for a living,
and what their family was like. Some people are able to
recall memories quite easily, while others may only remember
a small amount of information.
of Past Life Regression:
There can be benefits to past life
regression and you don't even really have to be a believer
in reincarnation. You just have to have an open mind and a
willingness to get to the root of issues that have been
troubling you. People often have irrational fears, emotional
blocks or even physical symptoms that can't be explained by
traditional means. When people can't find relief or
understanding through conventional methods they may be more
willing to look at alternative methods.
Many people claim to have had a fair
degree of success through past life regression and have been
able to overcome fears, remove blocks and make needed
changes in their lives once they were able to confront the
source of their problems that have been rooted in a previous
life. Irrational fears that seem to have no basis in one's
present life can be carried over from a past life as the
result of a traumatic event that occurred a lifetime or even
several lifetimes ago. Once a person recognizes and
acknowledges the source of that fear he or she is able to
let go, release the past and move forward with the present.
Just because we don't remember past
lifetimes doesn't mean that we don't bring fragments of past
lives into the present. Talents, fears, unresolved issues
and more can be brought into the present existence. People
that have unresolved issues from a past life may find
themselves with emotional blocks in areas pertaining to
those issues without knowing why. This can affect a person's
physical health, personal relationships or even financial
Past life regression is by no means a
cure-all but it can help people to understand themselves in
a way they never thought they could. Past life regression
therapy can utilize a combination of hypnosis and meditation
techniques. It is important to find a qualified professional
if you choose to seek past life therapy. Each session
usually lasts an average of an hour, possibly longer and the
price may vary. Past life regression therapy is not meant to
replace traditional medical or mental health care but as an
aid to one's health on all levels. Past life regression can
help you to find the source of destructive patterns in your
life and to break those patterns. It can also provide you
with a deeper insight into yourself. In some instances, a
breakthrough can occur after just one session of past life
regression therapy. In other cases, it can take several
sessions to get to the root of deep-seated issues. Although
past life regression may not solve all of your problems, if
you go into past life regression therapy with an open mind
you can come out with more clarity and a better
understanding of your life purpose.
